Michigan Creatives

Two Peninsulas of Talent

Governor Granholm is between a rock and a hard place these days as she struggles with how to keep the State of Michigan solvent. One of her strategies is to cut arts spending. While I don't agree with that action, I do recognize the serious nature of trying to balance a budget in Michigan. Artwork has not been selling very well of late and that concerns me. Without sales and without some funding from the State, I'm afraid that many of us are going to be left out in the cold and the State of Michigan will lose some of its "Michigan Creatives" to other places where it is possible to make a living.

It's a timely question, Charles, and one on my mind, as well. One of the reasons I founded this group now is to help connect us to peers, to help us engage in meaningful conversations like this, etc. Ultimately, I want to help make those in state government, and frankly all across the state, aware of what a deep, talented pool of creative thinkers reside in these two peninsulas, and why we need to leverage that ability for our mutual benefit.
